During its transition from crawling insect to winged creature, deep in the cocoon, the caterpillar's body disintintigrates into a sticky pile of goo. Hidden in the safe, dark womb of the cocoon, it begins to reassemble into an entirely new form. As the release draws near, the winged creature must struggle with all its might to break free. This struggle is crucial for the wings to build strength. This painting process emerged during a period in my life in which everything familiar was stripped away, and my future was unclear. I was no longer in my beloved home and I wasn't sure how I would support myself. The one thing that felt sure was my compulsion to paint. At the very moment my life began to stabilize, it felt like humanity entered a similar season of unmaking--and, I hope and believe, a remaking. On the outside, viewing the destruction and inequality, humanity feels far from our potential, but I believe if we rest, trust, regather and struggle to reclaim liberty and justice together, we will transform.
